I’m not that smart so I don’t know how to say this more elegantly than: Women Effing Rock!
USWNT fought for equal pay (you know since were winning multiple World Cups, Olympics, and sold out stadiums worldwide, and the men… never mind) and they got it. Imagine that: equal pay! (in 2022!)
Women’s sports teams took strong stands for social justice.
And now they’re the first sports league to bust wide open the ability of athletes to control their own lives.
2020’s are DEFINITELY the decade of The Woman
It’s soooo past time.
GRRL! SUMMARY:
- The NWSL has ratified a landmark Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that, notably, abolishes the draft and implements a fully free agency model ushering in a new era of player empowerment and earnings, and making it the first professional sports league in the U.S. to adopt such a standard.
- Key aspects of the new CBA include significant salary increases—with the minimum salary set to rise to $82,500 by 2030—expanded healthcare options, and additional support for players, such as parental leave and mental health services.
- This strategic agreement is aimed at stabilizing labor relations up to 2030 and enhancing the league’s competitiveness by attracting top talent, both domestic and international.
UPCOMING:
- Next month (November 2023), the NWSL will eliminate the draft entirely, marking a significant shift to a fully free agency model for players.
- Ongoing discussions and preparations for the next media rights contract, set to be negotiated in 2027, focusing on attracting owners, sponsors, and media partners to invest in women’s soccer.
- The gradual rollout of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) until 2030, with immediate changes to player agency taking effect.
- Future initiatives aimed at enhancing support systems for players, including expanded parental leave, fertility, and childcare benefits.
