Claire Williams OBE made history as one of only two women to lead a Formula 1 team in the modern era, helming the legendary Williams F1 racing team as Deputy Team Principal from 2013 to 2020 before stepping away from the sport that had been her family’s legacy for over four decades.
EARLY YEARS
Born on July 21, 1976, in Windsor, Berkshire, Claire Victoria Williams didn’t choose Formula 1—it chose her. As the daughter of Sir Frank Williams, the legendary team founder, and Lady Virginia Williams, she grew up in a household where F1 wasn’t just a passion; it was oxygen. “I was born into a world where F1 became my life, and in which my dad was an extraordinary man who did extraordinary things,” she later reflected. Her brothers, Jonathan and Jamie, were equally immersed—the entire family lived and breathed the sport, attending the British Grand Prix every year as a cherished tradition.
But Claire’s childhood wasn’t just about glamour and podiums. In 1986, when she was just nine years old, her father suffered a devastating car accident in the South of France that left him tetraplegic and wheelchair-bound. Frank Williams continued to lead his team with extraordinary determination, and Claire watched him refuse to let his disability define him—a lesson that would shape her own approach to leadership decades later.
Despite the family business, Williams initially pursued a different path. She graduated from Newcastle University in 1999 with a degree in Politics, perhaps a nod to her desire to forge her own identity outside the racetrack. After university, she started her career as a Press Officer for Silverstone Circuit, cutting her teeth in motorsport communications rather than jumping straight into the family team.
OTHER INTERESTS
In 2014, Williams bought a house in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, embracing a life that balanced the high-octane world of F1 with quieter moments along the River Thames. She married Marc Harris in January 2018 in a beautiful ceremony at Claridge’s in London, and in October 2017, the couple welcomed their son, Nathaniel Louis Harris. While she traveled extensively for work, she also made time to save for the future and invest in a home life that grounded her amid the chaos of the racing calendar.
Beyond motorsport, Williams has shown a keen interest in green technologies and social causes. She became a global Brand Ambassador for Fortescue Zero (formerly WAE Technologies), championing sustainable innovations. She’s also been involved with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, serving on Prince Edward’s development board—a role that aligns with her commitment to mentorship and youth development.
EARLY SUCCESS
In 2002, Claire officially joined the Williams Formula 1 team as a Communications Officer, finally stepping into the world that had always surrounded her. She wasn’t handed anything on a silver platter—she worked her way up through the communications department, earning her stripes in the notoriously cutthroat world of F1 PR. By 2010, she’d been promoted to Head of Communications, proving herself as a strategic thinker who understood both the sport and the media machine that fueled it.
In 2011, Williams took on the role of Commercial and Marketing Director, and then, in March 2012, when Sir Frank Williams stepped down from day-to-day operations, she became the Williams family representative within the team. By 2013, she was officially named Deputy Team Principal—the youngest person to hold such a role in Formula 1 and one of only two women to lead an F1 team in the modern era. She was 36 years old, stepping into a legacy that came with both immense pride and crushing pressure.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
- 2013: Named Deputy Team Principal of Williams Formula One racing team, becoming one of only two women to lead an F1 team in the modern era.
- 2014: Led Williams to third place in the World Championship for Constructors, the team’s best performance since 2003.
- 2015: Secured another third-place finish in the World Championship for Constructors, cementing the team’s resurgence.
- 2013–2020: Achieved 15 podium finishes across seven seasons leading Williams—only two other team principals, Toto Wolff and Christian Horner, secured more during that period.
- 2020: Made the heart-wrenching decision to step aside from Williams F1 following the team’s sale to American investment firm Dorilton Capital in August, ending the Williams family’s 40-year involvement with the team after the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
- Awarded OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to Formula 1.
- 2021: Launched the Frank Williams Academy in tribute to her father, a program dedicated to transforming the lives of people with spinal cord injuries through education, training, and research.
- 2025: Became an expert Formula 1 analyst and returned to the F1 paddock, contributing to Channel 4’s coverage of the British Grand Prix and joining Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” documentary series.
INSPIRATIONS
Frank Williams was undoubtedly Claire’s greatest inspiration—not just as a father, but as a leader who refused to quit even when life threw him the cruelest curveball. Watching him run a championship-winning team from a wheelchair taught her resilience, grit, and the importance of never looking back. “If we always think about the past, what’s been done before, then we’re going to lose. And you don’t want to lose in Formula One,” she’s said, channeling her father’s relentless forward focus.
Her mother, Lady Virginia Williams, also played a significant role, providing stability and strength for the family through decades of highs and lows. Virginia passed away in 2013, and Claire has spoken about the profound impact both parents had on shaping her values and work ethic.
REPUTATION
Williams earned a reputation as a fierce advocate for women in motorsport, using her platform to champion female talent and push for greater representation in a male-dominated industry. She promoted women in motorsport initiatives, supported drivers like Jamie Chadwick as a Williams Development Driver, and consistently called out the sport’s lack of female leaders. “I don’t get it,” she said bluntly in 2024, highlighting F1’s failure to promote more women into leadership roles. She was often seen as a role model and light in the paddock, someone who faced sexism, inequality, and immense pressure with grace and determination.
But Claire’s tenure wasn’t without controversy or heartbreak. Williams struggled financially in its later years under her leadership, and the decision to sell the team in 2020 was devastating. “I still miss F1 every single day,” she admitted in 2025, reflecting on the bittersweet nature of walking away from the sport she loved. Despite the challenges, she’s widely respected for her honesty, her willingness to acknowledge her own strengths and weaknesses, and her commitment to doing right by her family’s legacy—even when that meant letting go.
FUTURE GOALS/PLANS
In 2025, Williams revealed she’s considering a bold career shift: entering politics. With a degree in Politics and a lifetime of leadership experience, she’s weighing a bid to become a Member of Parliament, driven by a desire to “drive positive change” in a different arena. She’s had meetings with political figures and is seriously contemplating standing for election, though she hasn’t committed to a specific party or timeline yet.
Meanwhile, she continues her work as a keynote speaker, sharing insights from her F1 career with global audiences. She’s also a Brand Ambassador for Santander (a Williams F1 sponsor) and remains deeply involved in the Frank Williams Academy, ensuring her father’s legacy of resilience and support for spinal cord injury survivors lives on. And while she’s moved on from the paddock, her love for Formula 1 hasn’t dimmed—she’s staying connected through media work, consulting, and advocating for the sport she’ll always call home.
