Savannah's bio:

South African motorcycle racer Savannah Woodward made history as the first female rider ever to win a superbike race in her country and became the first South African and African woman to compete in the ITALIKA Women’s World Cup—a career nearly cut short by a devastating crash that left her fighting for her life.

EARLY YEARS

Savannah Woodward started racing in 2006 at the age of five on a motocross dirt bike in Benoni, South Africa. Though one source mentions she started on dirt bikes at age three, the love affair with speed was cemented early. Her parents, Paul and Eleaze, supported her passion as she progressed from Junior MX-Enduro to the Honda NSF100 Cup and short circuit racing. By 2015, the Benoni scholar had joined Monroe Racing after building a solid grassroots career in off-road endurance racing. When she was 15, she told her dad she wanted a road bike—his response? The only place he’d allow it was on the track. She listened.

OTHER INTERESTS

Beyond the racetrack, Woodward pursued teaching. She became a passionate educator, captivating her learners’ attention in the classroom with the same intensity she brought to racing. She has competed in both the 400cc and 600cc divisions for years while balancing her career in education.

EARLY SUCCESS

Woodward’s talent didn’t go unnoticed. In 2016, she participated in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup trials held in Spain—a significant milestone for any young racer. By 2017, she was representing FUCHS Lubricants on the international stage, with opportunities to shine in Italy and beyond. That same year, Monroe Racing South Africa backed her ambitions as she gained international exposure. In 2018, on her debut in the new Super 300 and Super 600 Class category under the Super-GP Championships Trophy, she finished on the podium at Round 1 of the 2018 Super-GP, marking her arrival in superbike racing with authority.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 2015: Joined Monroe Racing after successful grassroots career in off-road endurance and Honda NSF100 Cup[1].
  • 2016: Participated in Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup trials in Spain[2].
  • 2018: Podium finish on debut in Super 300 and Super 600 Class at Super-GP Championships Trophy Round 1[3].
  • Became first female rider ever to win a superbike race in South Africa[4].
  • First South African and African female to compete in ITALIKA Women’s World Cup[5].
  • 2018: Suffered life-threatening crash at Italika World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, sustaining traumatic brain injury with frontal and back lobe damage and trauma to cerebellum; placed on life support[6].
  • 2019: Took gap year from racing to recover from traumatic brain injury[7].
  • 2023: Invited to race in Italy at age 22[8].

INSPIRATIONS

Woodward herself became an inspiration to the next generation. South African racer Jessica Howden recalled seeing Woodward race a motorbike at the track and telling her dad she wanted to try it. “She won the race,” Howden remembered—a moment that sparked another girl’s dream in motorsport.

REPUTATION

Woodward is regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest motorsport stars, flying the flag for women in a male-dominated sport. Her resilience became legendary after the 2018 Mexico crash that left her critically injured. She spent days in a Mexican hospital with severe brain trauma while her parents rushed to her side. After returning home to Benoni to recover, she vowed to get back on her bike—and she did. Her determination to return to racing after such a devastating injury cemented her reputation not just as a talented racer, but as a fighter who refused to let tragedy define her career.

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

Information about specific future goals beyond 2023 is not available in the research provided.
