Stephanie's bio:

Stephanie Carlin didn’t start out dreaming of motorsport—she studied politics at university and figured she’d end up anywhere but a race paddock. But a well-timed connection and a knack for communications landed her in the thick of it, and now she’s one of the most prominent women in racing, juggling roles at McLaren, leading teams as a principal, and proving that sometimes the best careers are the ones you never saw coming.

EARLY YEARS

Born in May 1981, Stephanie Carlin grew up in Britain with no immediate connection to motorsport. She attended the University of Nottingham, where she earned a degree in Political Science—a choice that seemed miles away from the high-octane world of racing. She admits she never thought motorsport was in the cards. “I studied politics at university because I never thought…” she’s said, reflecting on how her career path took an unexpected turn. Her politics degree, though, wasn’t wasted—it turned out to be “an awful lot about communications,” a skill set that would become her ticket into the industry.

OTHER INTERESTS

Outside of motorsport, details about Stephanie’s hobbies and personal interests remain largely private. She’s married to Trevor Carlin, the founder of Carlin Motorsport, one of the most successful racing teams outside of Formula 1, with over 470 race victories and 30 titles since 1999 across F4, F3, and other junior categories. The two share both a personal and professional partnership, with Stephanie playing a critical role in the team’s commercial and operational success.

EARLY SUCCESS

After graduating, Carlin landed her first job in motorsport as an Assistant Press Officer for the Society of Motor Manufacturers. It wasn’t glamorous, but it got her foot in the door. From there, a colleague moved on to found the press office at A1 Grand Prix, and that connection brought Stephanie into the paddock for the first time. In 2006, she joined Carlin Motorsport, working in press and marketing. She quickly proved herself indispensable, climbing the ranks in a team led by her husband but earning her stripes on her own merit. By 2011, she was promoted to Commercial Manager, handling sponsorships, partnerships, and the business side of racing. It was clear she had a head for both communications and strategy—two things that would define her career.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 2011: Promoted to Commercial Manager at Carlin Motorsport, overseeing sponsorships and partnerships for one of the most successful junior racing teams in the world.
  • 2022: Became the first female Team Principal in the history of the eSports Championship (eSC), leading Carlin’s team to the top of the drivers’ and teams’ points standings.
  • 2022: Appointed Team Principal of Lewis Hamilton’s X44 Racing team in Extreme E, leading the squad as part of a new inclusive and diverse team direction.
  • 2023: Named Deputy Team Principal of Carlin, formalizing her leadership role within the storied racing outfit.
  • 2023: Served as Team Principal for Rodin Carlin’s Formula 3 and F1 Academy teams, expanding her influence across multiple racing series.
  • 2024: Joined McLaren Racing as F1 Business Operations Director, overseeing the Driver Development Programme and McLaren’s entry into F1 Academy, reporting directly to the team director.

INSPIRATIONS

Stephanie has spoken passionately about the importance of visibility for women in motorsport. “Sometimes you have to see things to believe it is possible,” she’s said, emphasizing the need for young girls to see women in leadership roles so they know they can do it too. Her work in F1 Academy—an all-female racing series launched in 2023 to develop female drivers—reflects this belief. She’s driven by the idea that representation matters, and that creating pathways for the next generation isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential.

REPUTATION

Carlin is known as a no-nonsense operator who gets things done. She’s respected across the paddock for her commercial acumen, her ability to juggle multiple high-pressure roles, and her willingness to champion diversity in a sport that’s been slow to change. Colleagues describe her as sharp, driven, and someone who leads with both competence and passion. She’s also been candid about the challenges of being a woman in motorsport, but she doesn’t dwell on them—she just keeps proving what’s possible. Her work with Carlin Motorsport, X44, and McLaren has made her one of the most visible female leaders in racing, and she’s using that platform to push doors open for others.

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

In her role at McLaren, Stephanie continues to oversee the Driver Development Programme, which now includes managing talent in F1 Academy. For 2025, McLaren signed Ella Lloyd to their programme, and Carlin will be working to nurture the next generation of female racing talent. Her focus is clear: building sustainable pathways for women in motorsport and ensuring that F1 Academy serves as a genuine stepping stone to higher levels of racing. She’s said her work is about creating opportunities—not just for today, but for the future. And if her track record is anything to go by, she’s just getting started.
