Krista Baldwin is NHRA’s only third-generation Top Fuel driver, carrying forward a family legacy that includes her legendary grandfather Chris “The Greek” Karamesines and her late father Bobby Baldwin.

EARLY YEARS

Born and raised in Upland, California, just a few miles from the Pomona dragstrip, Baldwin grew up breathing nitro fumes and watching her family make history on the quarter-mile[1]. Her father, Bobby Baldwin, was an independent Top Fuel driver who raced from the late 1980s through 2001, owning and operating his own team[2]. Her grandfather, Chris “The Greek” Karamesines, became one of drag racing’s most enduring legends, retiring from driving at age 89 in late 2020 after decades of competition[3].

Baldwin got her start in drag racing at age 18 behind the wheel of a 7-second front-engine dragster[4]. She pursued her education at Northern Arizona University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Strategic Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Photography between 2012 and 2015[5]. Even while studying in Flagstaff at age 21, she was already dreaming of following her family into Top Fuel racing[6].

OTHER INTERESTS

Outside the cockpit, Baldwin maintains a diverse range of interests including yoga, traveling, reading, and eating—all pursuits that help balance the intensity of professional drag racing[7]. She’s also built a career in the automotive performance industry, serving as Creative Director for both McLeod Racing and FTI Performance[8]. Her professional responsibilities have included everything from inventory management and accounting to general management duties for Paul Lee Racing, where she’s supported by veteran racer and mentor Paul Lee[9].

EARLY SUCCESS

Baldwin didn’t just ride her family name—she built her own operation from the ground up. She owned and operated an A/Fuel dragster program before transitioning to Top Fuel[10]. Her business acumen and racing dedication caught industry attention early: in 2017, she won the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network Athena Rising Star award, recognizing her as an emerging leader in the male-dominated automotive aftermarket[11].

She was also named to Drag Illustrated’s prestigious “30 Under 30” list, highlighting the next generation of drag racing talent and industry professionals[12]. These honors came while she was simultaneously working to launch her Top Fuel career, proving she could excel both in the boardroom and at the starting line.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 2017: Won the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network Athena Rising Star award[13].
  • 2017: Named to Drag Illustrated’s “30 Under 30” list[14].
  • 2022: Honored her late father Bobby Baldwin with a throwback livery at the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona[15].
  • 2024: Acquired veteran racer Pat Dakin’s Top Fuel operation, becoming a team owner[16].
  • 2025: Reached her first career Top Fuel final round at the IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series season opener at Darana Raceway in Hebron, Ohio[17].

INSPIRATIONS

Three generations of nitro racing courses through Baldwin’s veins, and she doesn’t take that legacy lightly. Her late father Bobby remains her primary inspiration—an independent racer who built and maintained his own operation without factory backing, demonstrating the grit and determination required to compete at the highest level[18]. At the 2022 NHRA Finals in Pomona, she piloted a dragster painted in a throwback scheme honoring his memory, bringing the emotional weight of that legacy full circle at her hometown track[19].

Her grandfather Chris “The Greek” Karamesines, who retired from driving at 89 (though some records suggest 92), has been instrumental in her development as both a driver and team owner[20]. After stepping out of the cockpit, he focused his energy on helping his granddaughter launch her Top Fuel career, providing the kind of hands-on mentorship that only a legend with seven decades of experience can offer[21]. Baldwin has piloted her grandfather’s dragster with backing from McLeod Racing, Lucas Oil, and Strange Engineering, literally sitting in the seat of history[22].

REPUTATION

At 28 years old, Baldwin established herself as far more than a legacy driver trading on a famous name[23]. She’s respected as a serious businesswoman in the performance parts industry and a capable driver who’s put in the seat time to earn her place in the cockpit. Her work ethic is evidenced by her dual roles: managing creative direction for major racing brands while simultaneously campaigning a Top Fuel operation[24].

Her 2025 IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series run to the finals showcased her resilience and skill under pressure. Despite facing a broken clutch lever in the first round, she skillfully lifted early and secured the win—not pretty, but effective[25]. “A win is a win,” she noted, displaying the pragmatic attitude of a racer focused on results rather than style points[26]. She advanced through the bracket methodically before facing Scott Palmer in her first final round appearance[27].

The acquisition of Pat Dakin’s Top Fuel operation in 2024 demonstrated Baldwin’s commitment to building a sustainable, competitive program. The new team, led by veteran crew chief Scott Graham and backed by AB&I Foundry, Zurn, Elkay, Fire Safe Group, and Zoeller, represents a significant step up in resources and professionalism[28]. As she noted, “I’m the only part that’s changed in this operation,” keeping the experienced crew intact while bringing her own vision to the team[29].

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

Baldwin is preparing for the 2026 season with her Krista Baldwin Racing operation, which she describes as “comprised of a team of individuals with world-class experience in drag racing at many levels”[30]. Her website is currently under construction as the team regroups and refocuses for the upcoming campaign[31]. The continuity of her technical team—with Scott Graham remaining as crew chief and Dan Minick as car chief—provides stability as she works to establish herself as a regular NHRA Top Fuel contender[32].

She’s also planning a wedding with Bobby Lane, her boyfriend and fellow racing enthusiast who has been part of her support crew[33]. Balancing a Top Fuel career, a wedding, and her corporate responsibilities at McLeod Racing and FTI Performance would overwhelm most people, but Baldwin has already proven she’s not most people. With three generations of drag racing excellence behind her and a hungry team around her, she’s positioning herself to make the Baldwin name a fixture in Top Fuel for years to come.
