Hong Kong-born, Malaysia-raised Katrina Ee is a four-time Asian karting champion making waves as the only Asian driver selected for David Coulthard’s More than Equal driver development programme—and she’s doing it all before she can legally drive a car on the street.

EARLY YEARS

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Malaysia, Ee discovered her passion for racing at seven years old during a casual karting outing with her older sister at the Shah Alam International Karting Circuit. What started as a hobby quickly turned into an obsession—she loved the adrenaline, the speed, and the sheer thrill of being behind the wheel. By age 10, she was attending school in Kuala Lumpur while simultaneously pursuing karting competitively, a balancing act that required serious commitment. Double R Motorsports took her under their wing early on, setting the foundation for what would become a championship-winning career.

OTHER INTERESTS

While racing dominates her schedule, Katrina is often described as soft-spoken and demure off the track. Her black-rimmed glasses and highlighted hair give her a stylish, in-vogue look that contrasts with her fierce competitive edge on the circuit. She’s still a teenager navigating school, racing, and the pressures of being a trailblazer in a male-dominated sport—but she handles it with a quiet determination that belies her age.

EARLY SUCCESS

Katrina didn’t waste time proving she belonged. At 12 years old, she secured her first two karting titles, claiming both the IAME Series Asia Junior and Rotax Max Challenge Asia championships. These wins announced her arrival on the Asian karting scene and set the stage for even bigger accomplishments. She also made her European debut, competing in the Italian Karting Championship with part-time appearances that gave her invaluable international experience. Racing against top-tier European competition sharpened her skills and proved she could hold her own on any track, anywhere.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 2022: Won the overall Junior Max championship in the Malaysia Karting Championship, becoming the first Malaysian female racing driver to claim an Asian junior overall title.
  • 2023: Retained the Asian Junior Karting title, making history as the first Malaysian female driver to win consecutively for two years; also won the Rok Cup Asia Junior championship and the X30 Junior title in the Asia Series.
  • 2024: Selected as the only Asian driver for David Coulthard’s More than Equal inaugural Driver Development Programme cohort; named Young Driver of the Year at the MAM Awards Night.
  • 2025: Made her car racing debut in the Ginetta Junior Championship with Tim Gray Motorsport at Donington Park, securing a personal best of P21 in the season opener; scored her first points at Silverstone in the second round, finishing the season with 12 points and 28th position overall.

INSPIRATIONS

Katrina draws inspiration from seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, whose underdog story resonates deeply with her. “Despite the odds being against him, I came into this doing it all on my own,” she’s said, reflecting on how Hamilton’s journey mirrors her own path as an Asian woman breaking into motorsport. She also looks up to German driver Sophia Flörsch, admiring how much the young racer has accomplished at her age, including racing in high-level series and overcoming adversity. These role models fuel her belief that she can reach the pinnacle of the sport, regardless of the barriers in her way.

REPUTATION

In the paddock, Ee is known for her quiet confidence and relentless work ethic. She’s the driver who shows up, does the work, and lets her lap times do the talking. Her four Asian karting championships speak to her consistency and skill, while her selection for the More than Equal programme—a data-driven, high-performance initiative designed to fast-track female talent—proves she’s not just talented, but exceptional. The programme supports drivers in all aspects of their development, not just behind the wheel, and Katrina has embraced the opportunity to grow as a complete athlete. At 14, she became a trailblazer for Malaysia and Asia, carrying the weight of representation with grace. “I feel like this is just what I was meant to do,” she’s said—and it’s hard to argue with that.

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

Katrina’s sights are set firmly on Formula 1, with the ultimate goal of becoming Asia’s first female F1 driver. Her 2025 season in the Ginetta Junior Championship marked a critical step in that journey, transitioning from karts to cars and gaining essential experience on British circuits. While the season presented challenges—including battling changeable conditions at Oulton Park—each race weekend added to her skillset and resilience. With the backing of More than Equal and the support of Tim Gray Motorsport, she’s building the foundation needed to climb the motorsport ladder. It won’t be easy, and it won’t be quick, but Katrina has already proven she’s willing to do whatever it takes.
