“I was a’wailing on that kid after the race before my dad came over and pulled me off him!
We did good for what we had. It was a mean business sometimes and there were some very big names in dirt track who I knew weren’t playing by the rules. At least two different teams once begged me not to protest them.
The good times outweighed the bad.”

Tammy's bio:

Tammy Jo Kirk is a groundbreaking American racer who conquered both motorcycle dirt track and stock car racing, becoming the first woman to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the first to win the legendary Snowball Derby.

EARLY YEARS

Born May 6, 1962, in Dalton, Georgia, Tammy Jo was the middle of three sisters in a family where racing wasn’t just a hobby—it was a lifestyle. Her father, Tommy Joe Kirk, worked as a welder by day and raced by night, running a Bultaco dealership right out of the family home for kicks. Growing up in that environment, it was inevitable that engines and speed would become second nature.

By 21, she was already in her second year as an AMA Expert with 17 years of riding experience and 12 years of competition under her belt. She traveled to each race with her parents, Tommy and Doris, and her two sisters, Debby and Diana, logging thousands of miles chasing the Grand National circuit. In a 1983 interview with Cycle World, she admitted what many suspected: “I’m really one of the most determined people you’ll ever meet. A woman has to work harder than a man to compete at the same level, and I accept the challenge.”

OTHER INTERESTS

After her racing career, Kirk returned to her roots in Dalton, Georgia, where she runs Kirk’s Cycle, a Honda dealership offering motorcycles, ATVs, and side-by-sides. The shop keeps her connected to the riding community and allows her to pass along the mechanical know-how she inherited from her father.

EARLY SUCCESS

Kirk started her racing career on motorcycles, competing in the AMA Grand National Championship series. In 1983, she made history as the first woman to qualify for an AMA dirt track final at the Knoxville Half Mile[1]. Wrestling a Harley-Davidson XR750 around the dirt ovals wasn’t for the faint of heart, but she held her own against the best riders in the country. Her best finish came in 1986 when she placed sixth at the Du Quoin Mile[2].

By 1988, she was earning points at multiple Grand National events, including a 13th-place finish at the San Jose Mile on May 22[3]. Racing out of Dalton, she eventually transitioned from motorcycles to dirt stock cars, and then to asphalt racing at the urging of Georgia Racing Hall of Famer Jody Ridley[4]. The switch paid off—she quickly became a force on the short track circuit.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 1983: First woman to qualify for an AMA Grand National dirt track final at Knoxville Half Mile[1].
  • 1986: Best AMA finish of sixth place at Du Quoin Mile[2].
  • 1988: Earned Grand National points at three events including 13th at San Jose Mile[3].
  • 1994: Won the Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway—widely considered the biggest upset in the race’s history[5].
  • 1997: Became the first woman to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, debuting at Walt Disney World Speedway with Lovable lingerie sponsorship worth $1.2 million, driving the No. 7 Ford F-150[6].
  • 2003: Competed in the NASCAR Busch Series with Jay Robinson Racing, finishing 45th in points with 1,062 total[7].
  • Career: Registered 37 top-10 finishes, 6 wins, 5 poles, and 21 podiums across multiple series[8].

INSPIRATIONS

Kirk’s biggest inspiration was undoubtedly her father, Tommy Joe Kirk, whose passion for racing and mechanical expertise shaped her entire career. Watching him wrench on bikes and race on weekends instilled in her both the technical skills and the competitive fire needed to succeed in a male-dominated sport.

REPUTATION

Her 1994 Snowball Derby win remains one of the most controversial and talked-about moments in short track racing history. Eddie Mercer fans will tell you—loudly—that she was a lap down. But the scorers flagged her as the winner, and the result stood. It was the kind of upset that made headlines and raised eyebrows, cementing her place in racing lore[5].

When Lovable Bra Company came on board to sponsor her NASCAR Truck Series effort, she found herself driving a pink truck—because that’s what the marketing director wanted[9]. It was a moment that highlighted the tightrope female racers walked: you needed the money, but the optics sometimes felt like a joke. Still, she showed up, raced hard, and proved she belonged.

Reflecting on her career years later, Kirk said it plainly: “We did good for what we had. It was a mean business sometimes and there were some very big names in it, but we held our own”[10]. That’s the kind of no-nonsense attitude that defined her—she wasn’t out to be a trailblazer or a spokesperson. She was a racer, period.
