Join me, Belinda Automotive, as I pay tribute to an absolute icon in motorsport, Sabine Schmitz.

Known as the “Queen of the Nürburgring”, Sabine Schmitz was one of the most recognisable and respected racing drivers in the world. With multiple victories in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and an unmatched knowledge of the Nordschleife, she built a reputation for speed, skill and authenticity that set her apart in the automotive industry.

Sabine’s story began long before the podiums and television appearances. Growing up in Adenau, just moments from the Nürburgring, she was surrounded by motorsport from an early age, with her family running the Hotel am Tiergarten, a well-known hub for drivers and enthusiasts visiting the circuit. From helping out at the hotel to learning the track like the back of her hand, her connection to the Nürburgring was personal as well as professional, shaping the driver and the person she would become.

In this episode, I look back at Sabine’s remarkable career, from her dominance on the Nürburgring to her unforgettable appearances on Top Gear, where she brought her personality, humour and raw talent to a global audience. One of the most iconic moments came when she took on the challenge of lapping the Nürburgring in a Ford Transit van, pushing it to its absolute limits and showcasing not just her skill, but her ability to make motorsport feel accessible, entertaining and completely unique.

Whether it was racing, coaching or taking on challenges that others wouldn’t even consider, she had a way of making the impossible feel achievable.

Her impact went far beyond lap times. Sabine became a symbol of what was possible in motorsport and a figure who inspired so many within the industry, not just through what she achieved, but through how she carried herself.
