Leah Pruett saved the best for last Friday at the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, blasting to the provisional No. 1 spot in Top Fuel during the 66th annual NHRA Winternationals.
Driving for Tony Stewart Racing, Pruett laid down a 3.724-second pass at 329.75 mph to cap the day, continuing her early-season momentum after a final-round finish in Phoenix. She made it clear, though — the number likely won’t hold with cooler conditions ahead.
“What we’re seeing today is the cohesiveness of our whole team… 3.72 is not going to hold,” Pruett said. “We’re working toward a solid 3.66-.67 foundation.”
In Funny Car, rising talent Jordan Vandergriff turned heads again, powering his John Force Racing entry to the No. 1 position with a 3.951 at 327.90. It’s just his third start in the class, and the young driver is already knocking on the door of his first No. 1 qualifier — at his home track, no less.
“This is definitely a new experience for me… that run felt pretty perfect,” Vandergriff said.
Meanwhile, Pro Stock veteran Greg Anderson showed why Pomona has long been his playground. The six-time champion topped both sessions, closing with a 6.544 at 209.39 in his Chevrolet Camaro to secure the provisional No. 1 spot.
“We come here and we got a decent racetrack… and you can run fast,” Anderson said. “The field is nowhere near set.”
With qualifying set to resume Saturday, the stage is set for a major shakeup across all three professional categories as teams chase cooler air and quicker numbers.
