If it drops even a split second too early or too late, riders can catch the gate, lose traction, and completely ruin their launch. That might not sound like a big deal, but in motocross, the start is everything. A bad launch can leave a rider buried behind the pack with almost no chance of recovering. That’s why the person controlling the gate carries one of the most important responsibilities on the entire track.
