LISA BRAIN
Lisa Brain is a Manx-born rider, single mother of four, healthcare practitioner and women-in-motorcycling advocate from the Isle of Man. After obtaining her first road licence in 2011, she went on to become the Women Riders World Relay Isle of Man Ambassador and the originator of the idea behind the first women-led TT Legacy Lap on the Isle of Man Mountain Course. [1] [2] [3]
EARLY YEARS
Brain grew up on the Isle of Man, a self-governing Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea where the TT races are not simply a sporting event, but part of the island’s cultural identity. Motorcycling was woven into her family life from an early age. Her father was a short-circuit racer in the 1970s, her mother had been riding since the age of sixteen, and Brain herself was given her first motorcycle at the age of five. [1]
That family connection continued into the next generation, with her own children also taking part in trials riding at one stage. [1] Brain’s relationship with motorcycles is therefore not simply recreational; it sits within a wider family and Manx tradition of two-wheeled life.
OTHER INTERESTS
Away from motorcycling, Brain has built a professional life in healthcare. She founded Manx Ear MicroCare, an Isle of Man ear-health service offering ear checks, ear-wax removal and hearing-care advice. Her professional background includes public health, psychology and clinical care, which she brings into her work as a healthcare-trained ear-care practitioner. [4]
It is a fitting contrast: the same person who helped place women visibly at the front of one of the world’s most famous motorcycling courses also works in a field requiring calmness, care, precision and trust.
RIDING JOURNEY
Brain obtained her first road licence in 2011 after being encouraged by a friend to take the step into road riding. [1] Although she did not come through a traditional racing pathway, her connection to the TT Mountain Course is deeply personal. As a Manx-born woman, rider and WRWR Isle of Man Ambassador, she grew up with the roads, the history, the sound and the culture of the TT woven into everyday life.
That local knowledge and emotional connection became central to her role in helping create and lead the historic women-led TT Legacy Lap — a visible and respectful lap of the Mountain Course celebrating women in motorcycling, honouring those who came before, and showing how many women riders are part of the story today. [2] [3] [5]
Rather than being defined by racing titles, Brain’s significance lies in community-building, advocacy and visibility. She helped turn an idea into a moment that brought women riders together from the Isle of Man and across the world, placing them at the front of the course in a way that was powerful, symbolic and long overdue.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
2011: Obtained her first road licence, beginning her road-riding journey on the Isle of Man. [1]
Ongoing: Became a visible advocate for women in motorcycling, using her platform to promote connection, representation and recognition for women riders on the Isle of Man and beyond. [1] [2]
2025: Appointed official Isle of Man Ambassador for Women Riders World Relay. [2] [3]
2026: Originated the concept of a women-led TT Legacy Lap and helped bring it to life in partnership with Women Riders World Relay. [3]
2026: Helped lead the first women-led TT Legacy Lap on the Isle of Man Mountain Course, with WRWR taking the front of the speed-controlled ride-out during the 2026 Isle of Man TT. [2] [5]
2026: Helped create a highly visible moment of recognition for women in motorcycling, bringing together Manx riders, international visitors, racers, advocates and supporters to celebrate women’s place in TT and Mountain Course history. [1] [2] [3] [5]
INSPIRATIONS
The historical backdrop to Brain’s work is important. In 1962, Beryl Swain became the first woman to compete in a solo TT race on the Isle of Man Mountain Course. After that achievement, her opportunity to continue was effectively cut short, and women were absent from solo TT competition for many years afterwards. [6]
Brain’s efforts to bring women visibly to the front of the Mountain Course are not happening in a vacuum. They form part of a much longer story about women fighting to be seen, recognised and included in motorcycling. Her family’s own generational connection to motorcycle culture, together with her role as WRWR Isle of Man Ambassador, suggests her motivation is rooted in community, heritage and representation rather than personal ambition alone. REPUTATION
Within the Women Riders World Relay community and the wider Isle of Man motorcycling scene, Brain has been publicly credited for the role she played in making the women-led Legacy Lap happen. WRWR/Norton coverage stated: “This whole idea for the TT legacy lap came from Lisa Brain, our WRWR Isle of Man Ambassador.” [3]
That attribution matters. In motorsport, ideas that create historic moments can easily be absorbed into the larger event or institution hosting them. The fact that her peers publicly named Brain as the source of the initiative reflects a community that recognised whose work and vision helped bring it into being.
Coverage of her story has also noted that she achieved this while raising four sons as a single mother. [1] [3] That detail does not define the achievement, but it does underline the level of commitment, persistence and practical determination behind it.
FUTURE GOALS AND PLANS
The 2026 TT Legacy Lap was not presented as a one-off gesture, but as part of a wider movement to make women riders more visible. Brain has spoken about the importance of women being at the front of the convoy and of WRWR’s mission to connect women riders, inspire confidence and challenge perceptions of what women riders can achieve. [2]
Her continued role as WRWR Isle of Man Ambassador positions her as an ongoing advocate for women’s visibility in motorcycling on the Isle of Man and beyond.
