It is 50 years since an F1 Grand Prix last featured a female race driver. Italy’s Lella Lombardi competed at the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix, marking the latest championship appearance by a woman.

Lombardi remains the only woman to score F1 World Championship points, earning half a point for sixth place in the shortened 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. Maria Teresa de Filippis was the first woman to compete in a World Championship Grand Prix, in 1958.

Since then, women including Giovanna Amati, Susie Wolff, Tatiana Calderon, Jamie Chadwick, Jessica Hawkins and others have pursued opportunities in F1, through racing, testing and development roles. Susie Wolff became the first woman since 1992 to participate in an F1 weekend when she drove for Williams in practice at the 2014 British Grand Prix.

As Formula 1 marks five decades since Lombardi’s last Grand Prix appearance, the history highlights both the pioneering achievements of women in the sport and the continuing gap on the championship grid.
