It has been 50 years since a female driver last competed in a Formula 1 World Championship race.

Italian driver Lella Lombardi made history as the last woman to start an F1 race when she competed at the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix. Lombardi remains one of only two women to have started a Formula 1 World Championship race, alongside fellow Italian Maria Teresa de Filippis.

Over the decades, several other women have attempted to reach the F1 grid or have tested Formula 1 machinery, including Desire Wilson, Divina Galica, Giovanna Amati, Sarah Fisher, Susie Wolff, Maria de Villota, Simona de Silvestro, Carmen Jorda, Tatiana Calderon, Jamie Chadwick, Jessica Hawkins and Doriane Pin.

Susie Wolff became the first woman in more than two decades to participate in an F1 race weekend when she drove for Williams during first practice at the 2014 British Grand Prix.

The footage looks back at the women who raced, tested and worked toward Formula 1, and examines the long road toward seeing another woman compete on the F1 grid.
