Nellie Goins never set out to become a drag racer. In fact, she barely cared about cars.

She was supporting her husband Otis as he chased his dream of owning a Funny Car, making sacrifices and working alongside him to fund their racing programme. But when Otis was unable to drive, Nellie stepped behind the wheel.

What followed was an incredible drag racing career that earned her the nickname “Nitro Nellie” and made her one of the pioneering Black women in Funny Car racing.

She raced nitromethane-powered Funny Cars at more than 200 mph, competed at numerous events and built a racing team that became a true family affair.

Nellie’s story is a reminder that sometimes you don’t know what you might love until you get behind the wheel and try it for yourself.
