Vanina's bio:

Belgian racing driver Vanina Ickx carved out her own impressive motorsports career, proving she was more than just the daughter of six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx—though having that last name certainly didn’t hurt when it came to opening doors.

EARLY YEARS

Vanina Catherine Célia Ickx was born on February 16, 1975, in Brussels, Belgium, to racing legend Jacky Ickx and his first wife Catherine[1]. Growing up with a father who dominated endurance racing might sound like a fast track to motorsports, but Vanina’s childhood was anything but typical for a future racer. She and her sister Larissa didn’t see much of their famous father during their early years—he was off winning races and, after falling in love with Africa during his 1983 Paris-Dakar victory, spending extended periods exploring the continent with a guide and cook in tow[2].

Racing wasn’t on young Vanina’s radar. Instead, she focused on academics, pursuing a degree in biology at university[3]. It wasn’t until after she completed her studies that motorsport entered the picture—almost by accident, really. By the time she showed genuine interest in racing, she was already 21 years old, school was behind her, and she had that biology degree in hand[4]. Her father had no intention of coaching her or pushing her into the family business; if she was going to race, she’d have to want it on her own terms[5].

OTHER INTERESTS

Beyond the racetrack, Vanina pursued a master’s degree in marketing, adding business acumen to her scientific background[6]. After retiring from professional racing in 2012, she channeled her diverse skill set into entrepreneurship, becoming a shareholder in an aerodrome business in Namur, Belgium, alongside her husband Benjamin de Broqueville, a journalist with a passion for aviation[7][8]. She’s involved in the day-to-day operations, handling everything from management to marketing—because apparently conquering endurance racing wasn’t quite enough of a challenge[9].

In 2011, she took on one of the more unusual motorsport adventures: piloting a solar-powered car called the Umicore Imagine across Australia in the World Solar Challenge, driving from Darwin to Adelaide over seven days[10]. It’s safe to say Vanina doesn’t do boring.

EARLY SUCCESS

Vanina began racing in 1996 at age 21 in the BMW Compact Cup—a solid if unglamorous starting point[11]. She quickly showed she had the chops, moving through various series with determination. By 2000, she was navigating for her father Jacky at the Dakar Rally, an experience that cemented their unique father-daughter bond through shared adventure in one of motorsport’s most grueling events[12]. They would tackle Dakar together three times total, creating memories that went far beyond lap times and podiums[13].

Her breakout performances came in the early 2000s as she worked her way into more competitive machinery. In 2003, she competed in the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup[14], and by 2005, she had secured a full season in the Le Mans Series with Rollcentre Racing[15]. That year marked a turning point—she was racing proper prototypes and proving she belonged in the professional ranks.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 2005: Full season in Le Mans Series with Rollcentre Racing[16].
  • 2006-2007: Audi factory driver in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM)[17].
  • 2008: Victory at the Spa 12 Hours[18].
  • 2010: Class win at Nürburgring 24 Hours in a Volkswagen Scirocco GT24-CNG[19].
  • 2010: Sixth place overall at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in a Gillet Vertigo, completing the course in under 11 minutes[20].
  • 2011: Seventh place overall finish at 24 Hours of Le Mans—her best result in seven Le Mans starts[21].
  • Multiple victories in Ferrari Challenge[22].
  • Overall winner of Rallye des Princesses with sister Larissa in a Porsche 911[23].
  • 2024: Iron Dames’ first Michelin Le Mans Cup victory at Silverstone with co-driver Marta García, converting pole position into a commanding win[24].

INSPIRATIONS

While Vanina never sought to replicate her father’s Formula One career—she openly admitted she never dreamed of racing in F1[25]—Jacky Ickx’s influence was undeniable, if subtle. He didn’t coach her or push her into racing, preferring to let her find her own path[26]. Their relationship evolved into something special through motorsport, particularly during their Dakar adventures together. Jacky has spoken warmly about the parent-child moments they shared, encouraging those kinds of experiences for other racing families[27].

What drove Vanina wasn’t living up to a legendary name—it was proving she could succeed on her own merit. She built a career through sheer determination, working her way from club racing to factory drives without relying on her surname to do the heavy lifting.

REPUTATION

Vanina earned respect as a versatile, consistent driver who could handle everything from touring cars to prototypes to hill climbs. Being an Audi factory driver in DTM—one of the most competitive touring car series in the world—was no small feat, especially in an era when female drivers were still fighting for equal recognition[28]. She competed alongside some of the best in the business and held her own.

Her seven starts at Le Mans cemented her reputation in endurance racing circles[29]. That seventh-place overall finish in 2011 remains a standout achievement—not just for a female driver, but for any driver competing at the highest level of endurance racing. She was known for being professional, fast, and dependable—exactly what teams needed in multi-hour races where consistency matters as much as raw speed.

After retiring from professional competition in 2012 for undisclosed reasons[30], Vanina stayed connected to motorsport in various capacities. Her return to racing with the Iron Dames project has been met with enthusiasm, bringing her experience and name recognition to an all-female team making waves in endurance racing.

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

In 2025, Vanina has rejoined the Iron Dames program, partnering with Marta García in the Michelin Le Mans Cup[31]. The duo has already proven they work well together after their 2024 Silverstone victory, and both drivers have expressed enthusiasm about continuing their partnership. For Vanina, now 50 years old, this represents a new chapter—racing with purpose alongside talented younger drivers in a project dedicated to elevating women in motorsport[32].

She’s also part of Iron Dames’ broader initiative to strengthen diversity and excellence across GT racing, single-seaters, and karting programs[33]. It’s a fitting role for someone who spent years proving that female drivers could compete at the highest levels—now she gets to help pave the way for the next generation.
