FULL BIO: Laura Mueller
Laura Mueller made motorsports history in 2025 as Formula 1’s first full-time female race engineer, bringing her technical expertise and determination from Germany’s automotive engineering world to the pinnacle of racing.
EARLY YEARS
Growing up near Lake Constance in Germany, Laura dreamed of becoming a Formula 1 driver as a child. Her motorsports passion truly ignited during a gap year spent in Australia, where she immersed herself in the country’s supercharger car culture. This experience shifted her focus from driving to the technical side of racing, leading her to pursue both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in automotive engineering at the prestigious Technical University of Munich.
OTHER INTERESTS
Beyond the garage, Laura has established herself as a motivational speaker, focusing on perseverance, innovation, and breaking barriers. She regularly advocates for women in STEM fields and motorsports, appearing at events like International Women in Engineering Day to inspire the next generation of female engineers.
EARLY SUCCESS
Mueller’s motorsports career began in 2014 as an analysis intern with Phoenix Racing GmbH in the German Supertouring Championship. From there, she built an impressive engineering resume across multiple racing categories and continents. She worked with Josef Kaufmann Racing in Formula Renault 2.0 series, served as a data engineer with Hero Motorsport in Brazil’s Stockcar Championship alongside driver Lucas di Grassi, and gained experience in endurance racing with teams Nederland and Algarve Pro Racing in LMP2 categories. Her technical prowess was further demonstrated at Manthey Racing in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) series.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
- 2014: Started motorsports career as analysis intern at Phoenix Racing GmbH in German Supertouring Championship.
- 2016: Worked as engineer with Josef Kaufmann Racing in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and NEC series.
- 2022: Joined Haas F1 Team in simulator department before promotion to Performance Engineer.
- 2025: Became Formula 1’s first full-time female race engineer, working with driver Esteban Ocon at Haas F1 Team.
INSPIRATIONS
As a longtime fan of German Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, Laura drew inspiration from his racing excellence and dedication. However, she has expressed that reaching her historic milestone came with mixed emotions, noting it was “quite sad” that she was the first female race engineer in a sport celebrating its seventy-fifth birthday.
REPUTATION
Haas F1 Team Principal Ayo Komatsu has praised Mueller’s exceptional work ethic and problem-solving abilities, noting that “when she sees a problem, she digs deep and doesn’t stop at the first answer.” Her determination and technical expertise have earned respect throughout the paddock, with colleagues emphasizing that her gender and nationality are irrelevant—what matters is her performance and contributions to the team. She’s regarded as a trailblazer who exemplifies resilience, communication skills, and the ability to perform under pressure.
FUTURE GOALS/PLANS
Mueller remains focused on her primary role as race engineer for Esteban Ocon at Haas F1 Team throughout the 2025 season and beyond. Rather than dwelling on her historic status, she aims to normalize female participation in motorsport engineering while continuing to optimize team and car performance. Her ongoing advocacy work suggests she’ll continue inspiring women to pursue careers in STEM and motorsports.
