FULL BIO: Angelle Sampey
Angelle Sampey stands as the winningest female racer in NHRA history, with three Pro Stock Motorcycle championships and over 40 career victories that have cemented her legacy as a pioneering force in motorsports.
EARLY YEARS
Born August 7, 1970, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Angelle Monique Sampey developed an early passion for racing that would define her future. By age six, she was already winning competitions on her dirt bike, demonstrating exceptional talent that foreshadowed her illustrious career. While balancing between beauty pageants and racing in her youth, her competitive spirit ultimately drew her toward motorsports. The young rider’s natural ability on two wheels created a foundation for what would become one of the most remarkable careers in NHRA history.
EARLY SUCCESS
Sampey’s professional journey began when she took her then-fiancé’s street bike to a local drag strip, an impulsive decision that would change her life forever. Her formal training came at Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School, where she met instructor George Bryce, who quickly recognized her potential and became an instrumental mentor. Under his guidance, Angelle’s ambitions rapidly evolved from simply winning a single round to chasing championships. Her natural talent translated immediately to professional competition when she claimed her first national event win at only her fourth NHRA entry in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1996, marking the beginning of her meteoric rise through the ranks of Pro Stock Motorcycle racing.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
- 1996: Won first national event at Reading, Pennsylvania in just her fourth NHRA competition[3].

- 2024: Won her first four-wheel competition at Reading with Michalek Brothers Racing[2].
- 2024: Achieved runner-up finish at the prestigious NHRA U.S. Nationals in Top Alcohol Dragster class[2].
REPUTATION
In the motorsports world, Angelle is revered not just for breaking gender barriers but for dominating her field regardless of gender. Her reputation combines fierce competitiveness with an authentic, relatable personality that has earned her fans across generations. What makes Sampey particularly special is her ability to return to racing after retirement and motherhood, proving that age and family responsibilities don’t diminish talent or determination. With over 40 event wins, she sits third all-time in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle victories, cementing her status as a living legend. Competitors respect her technical skill and racing intellect, while fans admire her grit and perseverance. Rather than being categorized as a great “female” racer, she’s simply recognized as one of the greatest ever to compete in Pro Stock Motorcycle—a distinction that speaks volumes about her impact on the sport.
FUTURE GOALS/PLANS
For 2025, Angelle continues her partnership with Michalek Brothers Racing (MBR), piloting a groundbreaking closed-canopy A/Fuel Dragster—the first of its kind in NHRA competition. With backing from longtime sponsor Hangsterfer’s, her immediate focus is on mastering this four-wheel machine and continuing to build on her successful transition from motorcycles. While she’s already proven herself capable in Top Alcohol Dragster competition, her stated ambition is to continue improving her skills before ultimately graduating to Top Fuel, drag racing’s premier category. This methodical approach demonstrates her commitment to excellence and safety as she pioneers yet another path for women in motorsports. Through her participation in the AB Motorsports Accelerate program, she remains dedicated to breaking new ground and inspiring the next generation of female racers while chasing more victories and records.
