Doreen Walmsley
Motorcycle racing // Canadian
Doreen Walmsley was a pioneering British female racer who broke barriers in motorsports during the 1960s and early 1970s, achieving numerous victories and records in a male-dominated field.
EARLY YEARS
Born in 1931 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, to George Walmsley, a mechanic and garage owner, and Polly Walmsley, a seamstress. Growing up as the only daughter among four siblings in a working-class family, Doreen spent her childhood in her father’s garage, where she developed mechanical skills from an early age. By 12, she could dismantle and reassemble engines, and at 14, she was racing homemade soapbox cars against her brothers on Blackburn’s steep cobblestone streets—experiences that fostered the fearless cornering style she later became known for.
EARLY SUCCESS
Doreen’s formal racing career began with hillclimb events, where her ingenious ability to optimize performance from limited resources—a skill developed in her family’s garage—made her a formidable competitor. This resourcefulness and technical knowledge, combined with her fearless driving style, allowed her to compete successfully against male drivers despite the sport’s unwelcoming attitude toward women at the time.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
- 1959: Secured first career victory at the Midland Motor Racing Club Championship, becoming the first woman to win the title[1].
- 1964: Finished 8th in class at the Targa Florio endurance race, co-driving a Sunbeam Alpine[2].
- 1966: Won the Brands Hatch Saloon Car Race in a Ford Cortina, marking her first major circuit victory[3].
- 1969: Set a class speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats, achieving 148.7 mph in a modified Chevrolet Camaro[4].
- 1972: Claimed 3rd place at the Silverstone 6 Hours endurance race in a Ford Escort RS1600[5].
