Dystany Spurlock is a trailblazing motorcycle drag racer and the first African-American female team owner in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), competing in the Pro Stock Motorcycle division while inspiring the next generation of racers.

EARLY YEARS

Born and raised in the Richmond, Virginia area, Dystany grew up in a family that nurtured her love for speed and competition. Her parents were avid motorcycle riders who frequently took her on rides, while Sundays were dedicated to watching NASCAR races together. Living near Richmond International Raceway, with grandparents just a mile away from the track, the sounds of racing cars became a familiar backdrop to her childhood. At age 12, her godfather introduced her to motorcycle drag racing, igniting a passion that would define her future career. Dystany’s mother was particularly influential, encouraging her from age four to pursue her dreams regardless of gender norms. By 17, after attending a motor-drag race at Virginia Motorsports Park, her mother purchased her a 2006 GSX-R750 motorbike, marking the beginning of her racing journey[1][4].

EARLY SUCCESS

Starting her competitive career at 17, Dystany quickly established herself in motorcycle drag racing. She set impressive records early on, including a quarter-mile run of 8.46 seconds at 163 mph on the Brocks BMW Performance bike. Another notable achievement was becoming the fastest woman on a BMW s1000rr in Curacao, with a time of 8.57 seconds. Her talent and determination led to historic accomplishments, including becoming the first African-American female to win a 4.60 at the South Georgia Motorsports Park in 2019. Before turning professional, she developed her skills in various racing categories, including the Xtreme Dragbike Association (XDA), overcoming challenges faced by women in this male-dominated sport[1][5].

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 2018: Inducted into the Hopkins BMW Museum[4].
  • 2019: Became the first African-American female to win a 4.60 at the South Georgia Motorsports Park[4].
  • 2023: Competed full-time in the Skip Barber Formula Race Series season[1].
  • 2023: Completed her first Skip Barber Formula Race Series race[1].
  • 2024: Competed in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season[5].

REPUTATION

At 31 years old, Dystany has established herself as both a competitor in the NHRA and the owner of a professional stock motorcycle team. Her groundbreaking status as the first African American woman to own a team in the NHRA has cemented her reputation as a trailblazer for diversity in motorsports. Beyond her racing prowess, she is recognized for her commitment to giving back through organizing career days that educate children about motorsports opportunities. Through her “What’s Your Destiny Foundation,” Dystany serves as an inspiration for young girls and underrepresented communities interested in racing. Her versatility as an athlete is demonstrated by her successful transition from motorcycle drag racing to formula racing in the Skip Barber Series, showcasing her adaptability and determination in multiple racing disciplines[1][4].

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

Dystany aims to race a full season of NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle every year, contingent on securing the necessary partnerships and funding. She plans to build reliable motors and establish an engine-building team to support her racing endeavors. Through her “What’s Your Destiny Foundation,” she intends to continue introducing children to motorsports and encouraging them to consider it as a viable career option. Her versatility suggests she may explore additional racing disciplines beyond drag racing and formula racing in the coming years[1][2].
