Lauri Eberhart isn’t a racer—she’s the woman who makes the races happen. From her earliest days assisting in public relations at Michigan International Speedway while still in high school to becoming CEO of one of America’s most legendary racetracks, she’s built a career steering the business side of motorsports with the same precision drivers bring to the track.

EARLY YEARS

Growing up in Jackson, Michigan—about 80 miles west of Detroit—Lauri Eberhart had motorsports in her blood before she could drive. Her mother worked as the controller at Michigan International Speedway during Roger Penske’s ownership, which meant the roar of engines and the smell of racing fuel were just part of the family business. While other high schoolers were working retail or flipping burgers, Eberhart landed a gig as an assistant to Michigan International Speedway’s public relations director. Most teenagers would kill for backstage passes to concerts; she got a backstage pass to one of NASCAR’s premier tracks. That early exposure didn’t just give her a front-row seat to racing—it gave her a crash course in how the entire motorsports machine operates, from media relations to the thousands of moving parts that make race day possible.

After cutting her teeth at Michigan International Speedway, she moved to Richmond International Raceway before landing at Speedway Motorsports and Charlotte Motor Speedway, where she’d spend over a decade. For more than 12 years, she served as General Counsel for both organizations—meaning she was the legal brain behind some of NASCAR’s biggest operations. But she didn’t just stay in the lawyer’s office: for three years, she ran the day-to-day operations of Charlotte Motor Speedway itself, right in the heart of NASCAR Country. That’s where she learned from one of her most important mentors, the legendary Humpy Wheeler, whose creativity and bold thinking clearly rubbed off. She negotiated with everyone who mattered in the sport—NASCAR, NHRA, World of Outlaws, IndyCar, Andretti Autosport, McLaren IndyCar, Trackhouse Racing, and major media players like ESPN, NBC, CBS, FloSports, TBS, and the Discovery Channel. Her skillset became a Swiss Army knife of motorsports management: sports promotion, business development, operations, crisis management, creative thinking, relationship-building, and the art of getting deals done.

• 2000s-2020s: Served as General Counsel for Speedway Motorsports and Charlotte Motor Speedway for over 12 years, negotiating contracts with major racing series and media organizations[3].

Her mother’s role at Michigan International Speedway opened the door, but it was mentor Humpy Wheeler who taught Eberhart how to think bigger. When Friends of Laguna Seca needed someone to lead one of American racing’s most storied facilities into its next chapter, they didn’t pick just anyone—they picked Eberhart. Bruce Canepa, vice president of Friends of Laguna Seca, made it clear why: “From my first interaction with Lauri it was obvious that she shared our passion and vision for the future of Laguna Seca. Her background includes a wealth of motorsports experience that will lead us to a greatly improved Laguna Seca that will benefit the community, motorsports, and fans”[2]. She’s known in the industry for her legal acumen, sure, but also for her ability to navigate complex negotiations with everyone from racing series executives to broadcast networks to Fortune 500 sponsors. Racers might want to race every weekend in five different series—as she wryly noted about driver exclusivity contracts—but Eberhart knows how to structure the deals that make it all possible[3].
