Lauri's bio:

Lauri Eberhart isn’t a racer—she’s the woman who makes the races happen. From her earliest days assisting in public relations at Michigan International Speedway while still in high school to becoming CEO of one of America’s most legendary racetracks, she’s built a career steering the business side of motorsports with the same precision drivers bring to the track.

EARLY YEARS

Growing up in Jackson, Michigan—about 80 miles west of Detroit—Lauri Eberhart had motorsports in her blood before she could drive. Her mother worked as the controller at Michigan International Speedway during Roger Penske’s ownership, which meant the roar of engines and the smell of racing fuel were just part of the family business. While other high schoolers were working retail or flipping burgers, Eberhart landed a gig as an assistant to Michigan International Speedway’s public relations director. Most teenagers would kill for backstage passes to concerts; she got a backstage pass to one of NASCAR’s premier tracks. That early exposure didn’t just give her a front-row seat to racing—it gave her a crash course in how the entire motorsports machine operates, from media relations to the thousands of moving parts that make race day possible.

OTHER INTERESTS

Beyond the racetrack and the boardroom, Eberhart describes herself as a self-professed history geek—the kind of person who probably gets genuinely excited about historical markers on road trips. Her intellectual curiosity extends into her professional life through her own law firm, which she co-founded with a partner who specializes in entertainment law for sports. It’s a natural extension of her expertise: she’s not just passionate about racing, she’s fascinated by the legal and business frameworks that make modern sports entertainment work. She’s also developed serious chops in public speaking, a skill that serves her well whether she’s negotiating with Fortune 500 companies or rallying community support for a 55-year revitalization plan.

EARLY SUCCESS

Eberhart’s trajectory from high school intern to motorsports executive reads like a masterclass in working your way up. After cutting her teeth at Michigan International Speedway, she moved to Richmond International Raceway before landing at Speedway Motorsports and Charlotte Motor Speedway, where she’d spend over a decade. For more than 12 years, she served as General Counsel for both organizations—meaning she was the legal brain behind some of NASCAR’s biggest operations. But she didn’t just stay in the lawyer’s office: for three years, she ran the day-to-day operations of Charlotte Motor Speedway itself, right in the heart of NASCAR Country. That’s where she learned from one of her most important mentors, the legendary Humpy Wheeler, whose creativity and bold thinking clearly rubbed off. She negotiated with everyone who mattered in the sport—NASCAR, NHRA, World of Outlaws, IndyCar, Andretti Autosport, McLaren IndyCar, Trackhouse Racing, and major media players like ESPN, NBC, CBS, FloSports, TBS, and the Discovery Channel. Her skillset became a Swiss Army knife of motorsports management: sports promotion, business development, operations, crisis management, creative thinking, relationship-building, and the art of getting deals done.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 2000s-2020s: Served as General Counsel for Speedway Motorsports and Charlotte Motor Speedway for over 12 years, negotiating contracts with major racing series and media organizations[3].
  • 2010s: Ran day-to-day operations of Charlotte Motor Speedway for three years, one of NASCAR’s flagship facilities[3][5].
  • 2020: Co-founded her own law firm specializing in entertainment law for sports, representing speedways, motorsports properties, race car drivers, teams, and leagues[3][4].
  • 2024-2025: Named CEO of Friends of Laguna Seca, tasked with leading a 55-year revitalization plan for WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca[1][2][6].

INSPIRATIONS

Her mother’s role at Michigan International Speedway opened the door, but it was mentor Humpy Wheeler who taught Eberhart how to think bigger. Wheeler, the promotional genius behind Charlotte Motor Speedway’s most creative eras, influenced her approach to ideation and creativity—skills she references when talking about what she brings to her current role at Laguna Seca. “I think the thing that I can bring here is that creativity, that’s ideation, that’s what do we do,” she said, crediting her Charlotte experience and Wheeler’s influence for shaping how she approaches challenges[1]. In an industry that can be traditional to a fault, having a mentor who encouraged bold thinking clearly shaped how she operates.

REPUTATION

When Friends of Laguna Seca needed someone to lead one of American racing’s most storied facilities into its next chapter, they didn’t pick just anyone—they picked Eberhart. Bruce Canepa, vice president of Friends of Laguna Seca, made it clear why: “From my first interaction with Lauri it was obvious that she shared our passion and vision for the future of Laguna Seca. Her background includes a wealth of motorsports experience that will lead us to a greatly improved Laguna Seca that will benefit the community, motorsports, and fans”[2]. She’s known in the industry for her legal acumen, sure, but also for her ability to navigate complex negotiations with everyone from racing series executives to broadcast networks to Fortune 500 sponsors. Racers might want to race every weekend in five different series—as she wryly noted about driver exclusivity contracts—but Eberhart knows how to structure the deals that make it all possible[3]. Even fans took notice of her appointment, with comments like “I wish Ms. Eberhart all the best in her move west and her new job. It’ll be interesting to see what all the new developments are”[2]. In a male-dominated field, she’s earned respect not by being louder, but by being smarter and more prepared than anyone else in the room.

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

After 30 years in Charlotte, Eberhart made a decision that surprised even her: she said yes to uprooting her entire life and moving across the country to California’s Monterey Peninsula. The opportunity to lead WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s transformation was simply too monumental to pass up. “Laguna Seca is one of America’s most historic race circuits. I am excited and honored by this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lead the charge as Friends of Laguna Seca reimagines and reconstructs this incredible raceway to begin a new chapter,” she said upon her appointment[2]. The job demands boots on the ground—her words—and she’s ready to deliver, armed with a 55-year revitalization plan designed to preserve the track’s legendary heritage while enhancing fan experiences and securing its future as a premier motorsports and recreation destination. She’s already looking forward to the California weather and the beauty of Monterey, but more than that, she’s excited about the creative challenge ahead. Partnering with neighbors, the community, raceway staff, and Monterey County, her vision is to ensure Laguna Seca’s success benefits not just racing fans but the entire region for decades to come[1][2]. If her track record is any indication, this historic circuit is in very capable hands.
