FULL BIO: Leah Pritchett
Leah Pruett built her drag racing empire from the ground up, transforming from an eight-year-old tinkering in her father’s repair shop into one of NHRA’s most formidable Top Fuel competitors. With eleven event wins and multiple records under her belt, she’s proven that being fast and fierce isn’t just a good combination—it’s a winning formula.
EARLY YEARS
Born on May 26, 1988, in Redlands, California, Leah Christine Pruett discovered her need for speed in the most authentic way possible—getting grease under her fingernails in her father’s repair shop. While other kids were playing with dolls, she was learning the language of horsepower and torque. By age eight, she was already competing in the NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League, proving that some people are just born with octane in their veins. Standing 5-foot-9 and weighing around 130 pounds, she had the perfect build for fitting into a dragster cockpit—though her towering presence on the track would soon prove she was anything but small.
OTHER INTERESTS
When she’s not hurtling down a quarter-mile at 330+ mph, Leah keeps her adrenaline fix going through wake surfing, off-roading, snowboarding, volleyball, mountain biking, and archery. She’s also a dedicated dog lover, because apparently even speed demons need something fluffy to come home to. This cross-training regiment isn’t just fun and games—it keeps her in peak physical condition to handle the brutal G-forces of Top Fuel racing, where your body gets pummeled harder than a heavy bag at a boxing gym.
EARLY SUCCESS
Leah didn’t just jump straight into Top Fuel like some trust fund baby with a death wish. She paid her dues, working her way up through Nostalgia Funny Car and the NHRA Pro Mod Series, learning every nuance of high-performance racing. Her breakthrough came in 2010 when she claimed the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series Funny Car Championship, proving she could handle vintage muscle as well as modern missiles. By 2013, she was ready for the big leagues, making her Top Fuel debut with Dote Racing and setting the stage for what would become a legendary career in the sport’s most demanding category.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
- 2010: NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series Funny Car Champion
- 2016: First national event win at Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Chandler, Arizona, defeating Brittany Force in the first all-female Top Fuel final since 1982
- 2018: NHRA SAMTech Factory Stock Showdown Champion (first and only female champion in series history)
- Career Record: 11 total event wins (8 in Top Fuel, 3 in Pro Mod)
- Speed Record: Fastest elapsed time of 3.631 seconds at 334.15 MPH in Top Fuel
- 2017: 5th place in Top Fuel points standings with 4 wins
- 2018-2021: Consistent top-5 finisher in NHRA Top Fuel championship standings
INSPIRATIONS
While specific racing heroes aren’t documented in her public statements, Leah’s passion clearly stems from those early days in her father’s repair shop, where mechanical precision met automotive artistry. Her approach to racing emphasizes the technical side of the sport—she’s not just a driver who shows up and goes fast, but someone who understands every bolt, wire, and component that makes her 11,000-horsepower machine work. This foundation in mechanical knowledge has been the bedrock of her success, allowing her to communicate effectively with her crew and optimize performance in ways that pure drivers simply cannot.
REPUTATION
In a sport where crashes happen at 300+ mph and engines literally explode behind your head, Leah has earned respect for her nerves of steel and technical acumen. She’s not just survived but thrived in Top Fuel’s brutally physical environment, consistently running competitive times while maintaining the composure that separates champions from casualties. Her marriage to motorsports legend Tony Stewart has amplified her visibility, but make no mistake—she earned her stripes long before that relationship began. The racing community recognizes her as a legitimate barrier-breaker who’s opened doors for women not through publicity stunts, but through pure speed and professionalism.
FUTURE GOALS/PLANS
After announcing in 2024 that she would step aside from full-time racing to start a family with husband Tony Stewart, Leah confirmed in 2025 that her focus remains on family life rather than returning to Top Fuel competition. Currently residing in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, she’s trading quarter-mile runs for the different kind of endurance race that comes with building a family. While the racing world waits to see if she’ll eventually return to the cockpit, she’s proven that sometimes the most important victories happen off the track.
