Lisa's bio:

Lisa Brabham carved out her own racing career in the ultra-competitive world of British touring cars during the early 1990s, proving she had plenty of speed before becoming a key player in one of motorsport’s most legendary family dynasties.

EARLY YEARS

Born in New Zealand in 1964 or 1965, Lisa Thackwell came from racing royalty before she ever took the Brabham name[1]. Her father, Ray Thackwell, was a successful Kiwi speedway rider who first came to England at 16, and her brother Mike would become one of motorsport’s great “what if” stories—the youngest driver ever to compete in Formula One[2]. The family emigrated from New Zealand to Perth, Western Australia when Lisa was young, then later moved to England, a decision she admits still puzzles her to this day[3]. Whether the move was for Mike’s racing potential or other reasons, the Thackwell household was steeped in motorsport from the start. Ray encouraged both his kids to race—Mike started in motocross then karts, and Lisa followed suit, though her path would take a different turn[4].

OTHER INTERESTS

Lisa transitioned from racing driver to business executive within the Brabham organization, currently serving as Head of Licensing for Brabham Automotive[5]. In this role, she shapes and manages the global expansion of the Brabham brand through licensing and business ventures, ensuring the family name continues to carry weight both on and off the track[6].

EARLY SUCCESS

Lisa came to Europe in the early 1990s determined to reach an international level in motorsport[7]. She kicked off her racing career in the Renault 5 Cup, a fiercely competitive one-make series that was anything but a walk in the park[8]. She managed to claim a pole position in the series—a solid statement in a field packed with hungry drivers[9]. After a season in Renault 5, she switched to the Honda CRX Challenge with Edenbridge Racing, then moved up to the British Rover GTi Championship in 1992[10]. Racing tin-tops in the UK during that era meant rubbing doors with some serious talent, and she held her own.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 1991: Competed in the Honda CRX Challenge with Edenbridge Racing[11].
  • 1992: Raced in the British Rover GTi Championship[12].
  • 1993: Married Le Mans winner and Formula One veteran David Brabham[13].
  • 1994: Continued racing before stepping back from competition[14].

INSPIRATIONS

Growing up with a speedway champion for a father and a prodigiously talented brother likely fueled her competitive fire. Ray Thackwell’s encouragement got both Mike and Lisa into racing, and the family’s deep motorsport roots clearly influenced her decision to compete at an international level[15].

REPUTATION

Lisa earned respect for taking on some of the most competitive one-make series in Britain during the early ’90s and holding her ground. She wasn’t just along for the ride—she scored pole positions and raced wheel-to-wheel in a male-dominated field[16]. After stepping away from driving, she remained integral to the Brabham legacy, now overseeing licensing and business operations that keep the family name thriving in modern motorsport[17]. She and David married in 1993 and have two sons, Sam and Finn, who represent the third generation of racing Brabhams[18]. Her influence extends beyond the track, ensuring the Brabham brand continues to resonate globally while supporting the next wave of family talent.

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

As Head of Licensing for Brabham Automotive, she continues to lead the strategic direction of the brand’s global licensing partnerships and business ventures, ensuring the Brabham legacy remains relevant and dynamic in the modern motorsport landscape[19].
