Sara's full bio:
Sara Matsui is a Japanese karting prodigy and Williams Racing Academy Driver who started racing at five years old and has been turning heads—and turning laps—ever since.
EARLY YEARS
Born October 26, 2010, in Tokyo, Japan, Sara Matsui started karting in June 2016 at the age of five. She made her racing debut just one month later in July 2016, and by August of that same year, she’d already scored her first victory in the Kids Bambino class. Most kids that age are still figuring out how to tie their shoes—Sara was figuring out how to dominate on four wheels. In October 2016, she entered the Kids Expert class, and the upward trajectory never stopped. By 2021, she’d become the first female champion of the CA KART RACE series at Circuit Akigase in Saitama, and she also secured second place in the MOTEGI KART RACE series at Twin Ring Motegi. That year also marked her first forays into four-wheel racing cars alongside her karting activities, because why limit yourself to one type of speed?
OTHER INTERESTS
When she’s not behind the wheel, Sara enjoys listening to music and dancing—hobbies that probably help with the rhythm and timing required to nail a perfect racing line. Her official site lists her interests simply: karting, driving, listening to music, dancing. It’s a short list, but when you’re this focused on getting to Formula 1, you don’t need a novel-length biography of extracurriculars.
EARLY SUCCESS
Sara’s early success came fast and fierce. After winning her first race at five, she climbed through Japan’s competitive karting ranks with impressive consistency. In 2022, she became a finalist in the FIA Girls on Track Rising Stars program, a prestigious initiative run by the FIA Women in Motorsports Commission and the Ferrari Driver Academy. That recognition put her on the international radar. By 2023, she was enrolled in the Honda Racing School at Suzuka and competing in the JAF Regional Championship FS-125 class and other high-level Japanese karting series. The following year, in January 2024, Williams Racing came calling. At just 13 years old, Sara was signed to the Williams Racing Driver Academy, joining as one of the team’s youngest ever junior drivers. Williams’ Head of Driver Academy praised her as “one of the rising stars in karting,” and frankly, the results speak for themselves.

REPUTATION
Sara has built a reputation as one of Japan’s brightest young karting talents and a serious contender on the European circuit. Williams Racing described her as delivering “promising results” and recognized her as a rising star worthy of their academy investment. Her ability to adapt quickly to international competition—moving from Japan’s regional karting scene to Europe’s ultra-competitive OKJ and OK classes—has impressed observers. She’s known for her speed, her consistency, and her ability to fight to the front, as evidenced by her pole positions and podium finishes. In a sport where young female drivers still face an uphill battle for recognition and resources, Sara’s steady climb through the ranks and backing from a major F1 team signal that she’s not just talented—she’s the real deal.
FUTURE GOALS/PLANS
Sara’s long-term dream is crystal clear: compete in the world’s three major races—the F1 Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Indianapolis 500. It’s an audacious goal, but she’s already checking boxes on the path to get there. In 2025, she’s stepping up to the OK class of karting, continuing her development with the Williams Racing Academy. She’s competing in the GPR KARTING SERIES at Suzuka Circuit South Course and racing in the WSK FINAL CUP and Champions of the Future Academy Program throughout the year.
