Yep, that’s me. Easter Sunday 2017, Sauber Pit Wall, Bahrain. You’re probably wondering how I ended up here.
I was Pascal Wehrlein’s Race Strategist. P13 on the grid, slower car, faster cars ahead. The maths was simple: pit twice and you come out in traffic both times. Lose 23.5 seconds to the pit lane, lose more in dirty air, finish exactly where you started.
So we went long. One stop. 45 laps on soft tyres. The longest stint of the race. Tyre deg at 0.18s/lap, rears hanging on, and me on the radio saying: wait. Don’t pit. Keep going.
Same race, same principle, opposite end of the grid. Ferrari started P3, undercut Bottas by 5 laps, won the Grand Prix. If you start behind a faster car and do the same thing as them, you lose. You have to do something different.
Two strategy stories from the last Easter Grand Prix. One won it. One’s mine.
