Formula 1 has had female drivers before. That fact surprises a lot of people.

And yet here we are in 2026. Twenty four races. Twenty drivers. None of them women.

So what’s actually going on?

Because the conversation around female drivers in Formula 1 is one that the sport keeps having — and keeps failing to resolve. And when you look at the pipeline, the politics, and the barriers that exist between a talented female driver and an F1 seat… the picture gets complicated very quickly.

Because the talent is there. Doriane Pin — signed by Mercedes as a Development Driver. Abbi Pulling — making her way through the ranks with genuine pace. And further down the ladder, Alisha Palmowski entering the 2026 F1 Academy season as the overwhelming title favourite.

These are real drivers. Real contenders. Not tokens.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth.

Because wanting a female Formula 1 driver and actually having one are two very different things. The pathway from junior motorsport to an F1 seat is brutal for everyone. And for female drivers, the barriers — financial, structural, and cultural — are even harder to navigate.

So that raises a serious question. Does Formula 1 actually want a female driver? Or does it want to be seen wanting one?

Because there’s a difference. And right now, we’re not sure which one it is.

We hope we’re wrong. But hope isn’t enough.
