In nineteen fifty-eight, Maria Teresa de Filippis reached a Formula One World Championship starting grid. She drove a privately entered Maserati two-fifty F. Belgium became her first start in a championship Grand Prix. She had already proved herself in other racing categories. Her Catania-Etna hillclimb record in a Maserati stood for three years. Decades later, her name still marks the first woman to start a Formula One World Championship race.
