Michele Mouton (b. 1952) was not only the first woman to compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, but she is the most iconic to ever do it.

A French rally driver, Mouton came to Pikes Peak from the World Rally Championship in Europe. In 1981, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb debuted its rally car division. Three years later, in 1984, Mouton made her rookie run on Pikes Peak with her female navigator, Fabrizia Pons, in the Audi Quattro, the first rally car to have over 300 bhp and both a turbocharger and four-wheel drive. Mouton set a division record and finished second overall.

When she returned in 1985, she was the fastest competitor to reach the summit in 11:25.29, making her the first and only women to claim the King of the Mountain title and to set an overall course record.

Mouton’s legacy extends beyond her victories. She co-founded the Race of Champions and served as the first president of the FIA Women & Motor Sport Commission, advocating for greater female participation in motorsports. Her story continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of women in racing.
