Video Description from YouTube:
Let’s test drive and review the 2026 Toyota Corolla! And thanks to @homefieldapparel for sponsoring this video!
This 2026 Toyota Corolla Hybrid XLE sedan has a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine and hybrid system that makes 138 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. Your jaw might be d at that low number, but it feels more like 160 if you don’t know any better. The low-end torque makes this thing feel more powerful than it is. You also get an incredible EPA-estimated fuel economy of 53 mpg in the city, 46 on the highway, and 50 combined.
The Toyota Corolla nameplate actually turns 60 years old this year. The car debuted in 1966 as a 5-seat compact, and it’s been through 12 generations since. (There are photos of every old and new model in this video.) The Corolla’s been every shape — boxy, rounded, flat, angular — but always stayed small, just like this one.
The Corolla arrived in the U.S. as a 1969 model, and it had a four-speed manual transmission and 60 horsepower. It started at around U.S. $1,700, which is about $15,000 today. This is really significant if you follow car news, because in 2025, the era of the sub-$20,000 new car in America ended. You can no longer get a new car with an MSRP of less than $20,000 here.
The 2026 base-model Corolla is, however, still one of the cheapest new cars on for sale with a starting price of $23,000. This 12th-generation Corolla may look a little dated to you, and that’s because it’s been on the market for a bit. It arrived in 2019, and it looks older because Toyota is in the process of transitioning its exterior design language. We’re moving from this old style — where the Corolla has lobster-claw headlights — to an evolution that Toyota calls its “Hammerhead” style, where the front end and headlights of the cars have lines that resemble a hammerhead shark.
So why now care if a new Corolla will be here soon? Well: The Toyota Corolla is one of the best-selling new cars in America, despite the fact that Americans are obsessed with crossovers and SUVs these days. Toyota USA sold nearly 250,000 of them in 2025. I’m not exaggerating when I say this Corolla represents the golden era of economy cars, because even though it’s more expensive than the original Corolla when adjusted for inflation, it does so many things right — and it’ll bring more safety, fuel efficiency, and comfort to the masses who buy it. The fact that so many people do buy it is a huge deal.
This Corolla Hybrid XLE is $31,338, and in this video, we’ll talk about all kinds of things: comfort; controls; features; how it rides and drives; styling; the front and back seats; the JBL sound system; on-road noise (like wind and road noise); acceleration; Apple CarPlay and the infotainment system; the long-term impacts of regular economy hybrids on the American car market; the Honda Civic vs. the Toyota Corolla (both of which we have videos and reviews for!); and more.
Thanks for watching my YouTube channel. Enjoy the drive (and the video)!
