Ilka's bio:

Ilka Minor is widely recognized as the world’s number one female rally co-driver, with a career spanning over two decades in the World Rally Championship and a reputation for precision, grit, and unshakeable cool under pressure.

EARLY YEARS

Born on April 30, 1975, in Klagenfurt, Austria (as Ilka Petrasko), Minor grew up in the small Carinthian villages of Waidisch and Ferlach with three siblings. Her childhood was spent in the mountains of southern Austria, but there was one peculiar thing about little Ilka—she didn’t speak until she was four years old. “I don’t know why, I can’t remember,” she’s said. Once she found her voice, though, she never stopped moving forward. Her journey into motorsports began as a teenager in her native Austria, where rallying wasn’t just a sport—it was a way of life[1][2].

OTHER INTERESTS

Minor’s interests extend well beyond pace notes and timing splits. In 2010, she went into business for herself as a technician and rally co-driver, and by 2016, she’d added another credential to her résumé: certified fitness professional. She completed her training at the Flexyfit Sports Academy, earning her diploma as a Health Fitness & Personal Trainer and Functional Strength specialist. It’s not just about staying in shape for the rigors of rally—it’s about understanding the body’s mechanics, the same way she understands a car’s[3][4]. Since 1999, Minor has lived in Vienna with her husband, Gavin, balancing life at home with a career spent hurtling sideways through the world’s most demanding rally stages[5].

EARLY SUCCESS

Minor began her World Rally Championship career in 1997 at the Tour de Corse, sitting alongside Achim Mörtl. From there, she competed in the Austrian Rally Championship, cutting her teeth on tight alpine roads and learning the relentless rhythm of competitive co-driving[6][7]. Her breakthrough came years later, but those early years in Austria built the foundation—the discipline, the focus, the ability to stay calm when a car is dancing on the edge of disaster. Her career, as she’s described it, has been “a rollercoaster of feelings—ups and downs, coming and going”[8]. But she kept showing up.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 1997: Made her WRC debut at the Tour de Corse with Achim Mörtl[9].
  • 2005: Earned her first WRC podium at the Cyprus Rally with Manfred Stohl, finishing second—an emotional and historic moment for both Austrian teammates[10][11].
  • 2005: Named Austrian Sportswoman of the Year in Motorsports[12].
  • 2006–2010: Competed with Henning Solberg as privateers in six World Championship rallies, achieving five top-ten finishes in a Ford Focus WRC on gravel and a Ford Fiesta S2000 on asphalt[13].
  • 2011: Became the first woman ever to receive the Michael Park Trophy, an award given annually in memory of the late co-driver Michael Park. She was honored by some of the sport’s greatest, including Sébastien Loeb’s co-driver Daniel Elena[14][15].
  • 2013: Started her first season as a full factory co-driver for the Qatar M-Sport World Rally Team with Evgeny Novikov—a dream partnership, though it would prove short-lived after a rollover crash on SS20 of Rally Sweden[16][17].
  • 2017: At age 41, competed in the legendary Dakar Rally for the first time, tackling the grueling South American stages[18].
  • 2017: Co-drove with Tamara Molinaro in the FIA European Rally Championship Junior Cup in an Opel Adam R2[19].
  • 2018–Present: Continues to compete actively in WRC and European rally events[20].

REPUTATION

Minor has earned a reputation as one of the most consistent and respected co-drivers in the sport. She’s worked with a diverse roster of drivers—privateers, factory teams, rising stars, and seasoned champions—and adapted to each with precision and professionalism. Her Michael Park Trophy win solidified her place in rally history, and her longevity in a male-dominated sport speaks to both her talent and her tenacity. She’s competed in 142 WRC rallies and counting, and while she’s never won a championship outright, her podium finishes and top-ten results have made her a fixture in the sport’s elite circles[21][22]. That quiet girl from Carinthia who didn’t speak until she was four? She became the worldwide number one female co-driver by never backing down, never giving up, and always calling the notes with clarity and confidence.
