Becs's bio:

Becs Williams is the lead commentator for the FIA World Rally Championship and the established voice of rally broadcasting across WRC and ERC platforms — a career built entirely on talent, persistence, and a degree of Wellington-boot-wearing enthusiasm that goes back further than most people would expect.

EARLY YEARS

Nobody handed Becs Williams a route into motorsport. No one in her family had any involvement in racing — her parents did not drive competitively, and she grew up without a paddock connection to lean on [1]. What she did have were two older brothers, a trip to a rally in Wales, and the kind of sensory memory that tends to stick: the sound of the cars, the mud underfoot, the Wellington boots that were, given the conditions, entirely non-negotiable. “I can’t remember much about the rally itself,” she has said. “Other than the sound of the cars and the fact that I got to wear Wellington boots as we were in Wales and it was muddy and rainy.” [2]

She went on to complete a degree in Media Arts and Journalism, after which she took a small role at BBC Wales — enough to confirm that broadcasting was exactly where she wanted to be [3]. Her early coverage ranged across sports, including rugby and the Winter Olympics, before she found her way to motorsport with a focus that, once established, did not waver [3].

OTHER INTERESTS

Williams has described interviewing and engaging with people, presenting, and creating content for radio, television, and social media as central to her professional identity [3]. She has also scripted and voiced projects beyond live commentary, including work for the official WRC video game [3]. Her early career at BBC Wales introduced her to a broad range of sports coverage, and she has cited a genuine attraction to sport itself — specifically its capacity to generate stories about people pushing themselves to be their best — as the pull that drew her toward it [3].

EARLY SUCCESS

Williams began her career in broadcast journalism in 1999, working at Crown House Media and iRally and covering motorsport alongside other sports [4]. Her earliest motorsport reporting took place at the lower levels of the domestic British scene — Formula Ford and the Ford Fiesta Zetec Challenge — before she moved on to the British Touring Car Championship and the British Rally Championship [2].

In 2002, she began working in the FIA World Rally Championship as a presenter and interviewer for the official online radio station, World Rally Radio [4]. It was a formative posting. Between 2009 and 2012, she produced video projects for the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team, handling writing, interviewing, and voiceover [4]. Simultaneously, from 2009 to 2011, she worked with Peugeot UK producing vidcasts and voiceover for the Intercontinental Rally Challenge [4].

The standard she held herself to throughout was direct: “I wasn’t even a driver but I wanted to be the best commentator I could, regardless if I’m a male or a female.” [2]

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 1999: Began broadcast journalism career covering motorsport and other sports at Crown House Media / iRally [4].
  • 2002: Joined the FIA World Rally Championship as presenter and interviewer for World Rally Radio, the official online radio station [4].
  • 2009–2012: Produced official video content for the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team, including writing, interviewing, and voiceover [4].
  • 2009–2011: Produced vidcasts and voiceover for Peugeot UK in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge [4].
  • 2018–present: Appointed lead commentator for WRC Promoter’s WRC+ All Live platform, later Rally.TV, covering both the FIA World Rally Championship and the FIA European Rally Championship [4].
  • 2025: Named moderator and host of the DirtFish Women in Motorsport Summit, held on May 24 [5].

INSPIRATIONS

Williams has spoken candidly about the dynamics of working in a male-dominated industry. She has noted that women may feel unsure about entering spaces that have not historically included them, and that visibility matters — that seeing women already doing these jobs can provide the inspiration and confidence others need to follow [1]. Her own position on the matter is unequivocal: “Every single job a man does, a woman can do, there’s no question about that.” [1]

REPUTATION

DirtFish has described Williams as “one of the most important figures in the storytelling of rallying,” a characterisation grounded in more than two decades of narrating major WRC moments across radio and television [6]. The FIA European Rally Championship has called her “the established voice of the ERC” in her Rally.TV commentary role [7]. As of 2026, she serves as lead commentator for Rally.TV’s coverage of both the WRC and the ERC [5].
