I had no idea it was possible to drive so fast on gravel roads… I remember the nervous excitement and the thrill of competing.

They wouldn’t be allowed to run events like that today … we were expected to go solidly for 48 hours at a time, … but I loved it.

I have never pushed the female side of my achievements: I’m just an integral part of Neal Bates motorsport and rallying.

Coral Taylor is one of Australian rallying’s most decorated co-drivers, with five Australian Rally Championship titles, over 40 years of competition experience, and a record-breaking 36 career wins that cemented her place as a living legend in motorsport.

EARLY YEARS

Born in 1961, Coral Pamela Taylor was practically destined for a life in rallying—it was in her DNA. Her father was Norm Fritter, a veteran rally driver and one of Australian motorsport’s most beloved characters. Growing up surrounded by the roar of engines and the smell of burning rubber, she absorbed the sport from childhood. Rallying wasn’t something she chose; it was something she inherited.

Her introduction to the co-driver’s seat came early, learning the craft alongside her father. She prepared by taking co-driving courses at a car club and competing in local events, honing her ability to read pace notes and navigate under pressure. The family’s passion for the sport ran deep—her husband, Mark Taylor, would also become a rally competitor, and their daughter Molly Taylor would go on to become a champion driver in her own right. It was a family affair in the truest sense, with rallying woven into every conversation, every weekend, every major life decision.

OTHER INTERESTS

Outside the car, Taylor has dedicated herself to shaping the future of Australian motorsport from the boardroom. In 2020, she was appointed to the Board of Motorsport Australia, bringing more than four decades of experience to the table. Her passion extends beyond competition—she’s deeply invested in the community aspect of rallying, the people who make the sport what it is, and ensuring that the next generation has the same opportunities she did. She’s also been involved with various automotive boards, using her platform to advocate for better representation and support for women in motorsport.

EARLY SUCCESS

Taylor’s breakthrough came in the early 1990s when she teamed up with Neal Bates, beginning what would become one of the most successful partnerships in Australian rallying history. Their chemistry was immediate and undeniable. In 1993, they claimed their first Australian Rally Championship title together, then backed it up with consecutive championships in 1994 and 1995. The duo was unstoppable, dominating the national scene with precision, skill, and an almost telepathic understanding of each other’s rhythm.

Their partnership would span 18 years and cover much of Bates’ illustrious career, including several appearances on the World Rally Championship stage. Even when they didn’t win, they were always in the hunt—finishing second in the championship in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2006, and 2007. That kind of consistency doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of relentless preparation, mental toughness, and an ability to perform under the most intense pressure.

INSPIRATIONS

Taylor’s greatest inspiration has always been the people around her—her family, her co-drivers, and the rallying community that embraced her from day one. Her father, Norm Fritter, was her first hero, the one who showed her what it meant to live for the sport. Her husband Mark and daughter Molly carried that torch forward, each carving out their own successful careers while keeping the family tradition alive.

But beyond her immediate family, it’s the community itself that keeps her going. She’s spoken often about how much she values the camaraderie, the friendships, and the shared passion that defines rallying. It’s not just about winning—it’s about being part of something bigger, something that brings people together across generations and backgrounds. That sense of belonging, that love of the sport and its people, is what has sustained her through more than four decades in the game.

REPUTATION

In Australian rallying, Coral Taylor isn’t just respected—she’s revered. Her name carries weight, and not just because of the titles and records. She’s known as someone who shows up, does the work, and never makes excuses. Her technical skill as a co-driver is unmatched, her ability to read pace notes under pressure legendary. But it’s her character that truly sets her apart: her humility, her generosity with younger competitors, and her unwavering commitment to the sport.

Being the first woman inducted into the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame wasn’t just a personal milestone—it was a statement. It recognized not only her achievements but also her role as a trailblazer, someone who proved that women could compete at the highest levels and win. She’s inspired countless young girls and women to pursue motorsport, showing them that there’s a place for them in the driver’s seat—or the co-driver’s seat—if they’re willing to work for it.

Her influence extends beyond the car. As a board member of Motorsport Australia, she’s helping shape policy and advocate for the future of the sport, particularly when it comes to supporting female competitors. She’s not just a champion; she’s a mentor, a leader, and a voice for progress.

FUTURE GOALS/PLANS

As defending champions, Taylor and Harry Bates are aiming for a third consecutive Australian Rally Championship title in 2025. After winning Rally Tasmania to cap off the season, the duo is focused on maintaining their momentum and continuing their dominance in the series. For Bates, it’s home turf—Canberra is where they’ll start their title defense—and for Taylor, it’s another chance to add to her already historic career. At this stage, she’s not slowing down. If anything, she’s proving that experience, skill, and sheer determination only get sharper with time.
