Miki Koyama is a groundbreaking Japanese racing driver who made history as the first woman to win an FIA-sanctioned, all-gender single-seater championship with her dominant 2022 Formula Regional Japanese Championship victory.
EARLY YEARS
Born on September 5, 1997, in Yokohama, Japan, Koyama began racing karts at just five years old. Her family faced financial challenges, leading her to become self-dependent from the age of 14 when she stopped receiving financial support from her parents. Despite these obstacles, she persevered in motorsports, developing her skills through karting between 2003 and 2013 before moving to Formula 4 in 2015.
EARLY SUCCESS
After transitioning from karting to single-seaters through the Formula Toyota Racing School, Miki made her debut in the Japanese F4 series in 2015. Her breakthrough came in 2017 when she won the all-women’s Kyojo Cup series, successfully defending her title the following year. These early victories established her as a rising talent in Japanese motorsport, leading to her selection for the inaugural W Series season in 2019, where she finished seventh in the championship and set the fastest lap in the very first race.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
- 2017: Became the first champion of the all-women’s Kyojo Cup series.
- 2018: Defended her title as champion of the all-women’s Kyojo Cup series.
- 2019: Finished seventh in the W Series championship with a fourth-place finish at Misano.
- 2022: Won the Formula Regional Japanese Championship with seven victories and 17 podiums from 17 races, becoming the first woman to win an FIA-sanctioned, all-gender single-seater championship.

This represents a significant step in her GT racing career following her successful outings in various GT series in 2024.
