Ornella Ongaro—known as “La Tulipe” for her signature pink racing colors—is a French motorcycle racer who’s spent two decades proving that grit, talent, and a little bit of flair can break down even the most stubborn barriers in a male-dominated sport.
EARLY YEARS
Born October 16, 1990, in Cannes, France, Ongaro started riding at six years old—the legal minimum age—on a mini motorcycle, a Piwi 50. She wasn’t coaxed into it or testing the waters for fun; she knew from the beginning that racing was her path. “I always knew I would become a competitive racer,” she’s said, and frankly, when you start that young and that determined, it’s hard to argue.
Growing up in the south of France, she carved her way through the junior ranks with a focus that would become her trademark. While other kids were figuring out what they wanted to be when they grew up, Ornella was already living it.
OTHER INTERESTS
Beyond the racetrack, Ongaro has become an ambassador for road safety, using her platform to advocate for safer riding practices. She’s also been featured in interviews with French youth publications like Pif Gadget, where she’s worked to bring motorcycle racing to younger audiences—particularly girls who might not see themselves represented in the sport. It’s clear she’s not just racing for herself; she’s racing to open doors.
EARLY SUCCESS
By 2009, Ongaro had already made waves, finishing second in the 125cc French Championship and becoming the first Frenchwoman to secure a wild card entry for the 125cc French Grand Prix. Though she didn’t ultimately qualify for the race, the milestone was significant—she was forcing her way into spaces that hadn’t historically welcomed women.
In 2011, she became both the youngest French racer and the first French woman to participate in the legendary North West 200 in Ireland—a grueling road race in the 600cc category that demands nerve, skill, and no small amount of audacity. She was making history before she could legally rent a car in the U.S.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
- 2009: Second place in the 125cc French Championship; first Frenchwoman to secure a wild card entry for the 125cc French Grand Prix.
- 2011: First French woman to race at the North West 200 in Ireland, 600cc category; youngest French racer to compete at the event.
- 2016: French Women’s Champion in the 500cc class; third place in the French 500cc Championship racing against male competitors.
- 2017: Eighth place in Italy’s 1000cc R1 Cup (mixed category); first place in the women’s class.
- 2024: Returned to full-time competition after a four-year break; finished 10th in the inaugural WorldWCR (Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship) season.
- 2024: Competed at Donington Park, finishing seventh in Race 1 and fifth with teammate Roberta Ponziani.
- 2024: Crashed out on Turn 11 during the first lap at Balaton Park, Hungary; underwent surgery and aimed for a comeback at Magny-Cours.
- 2025: Competed in the second season of WorldWCR with the Ornella Ongaro Racing Team.
INSPIRATIONS
Ongaro has named Marc Márquez and Mick Doohan as her racing heroes, later becoming a huge fan of Valentino Rossi. It’s a lineup that makes sense—riders known for their fearlessness, finesse, and ability to dominate under pressure. She’s clearly taken notes.
REPUTATION
Ongaro is respected not just for her longevity—20 years of racing is no joke—but for her refusal to quit, even when life pulled her away from the sport. After a seven-year break due to personal responsibilities, she returned to racing in 2024 at 34 years old, jumping into the inaugural season of the WorldWCR. “The seven-year break was a very difficult period for me,” she’s admitted, but instead of staying sidelined, she came back harder.
Her reputation also rests on her role as a trailblazer. She’s competed in electric motorcycle races, mixed-gender European championships, and has consistently been the first or only French woman in various categories. In recent years, she’s continued to train hard and push boundaries, and her participation in the WorldWCR has been lauded as proof that women’s racing can—and should—be taken seriously at the world championship level.
“The Women’s FIM World Championship is a very good thing,” she’s said. “We were waiting for this.” Her advocacy for the series and her visibility as a competitor have made her a household name among those who follow the sport closely.
FUTURE GOALS/PLANS
Ongaro competed throughout the 2025 WorldWCR season with her own team, the Ornella Ongaro Racing Team. While specific future goals beyond 2025 aren’t publicly detailed, her trajectory suggests she’s focused on continuing to compete at the highest level possible, mentoring the next generation, and using her platform to advocate for greater opportunities for women in motorsports. She’s not done breaking barriers—she’s just getting warmed up.
