GRRL! is my girl-dad passion project.
As a girl-dad my greeatest joy in life came from helping my daughter grow into a strong, confident, self-reliant woman. And honestly I very much miss being of service like that.
Now that she’s out in the world kicking ass without me, I very much missed being helpful, especially for women, until one day when I realized there was an opportunity that had been hiding in plain sight. At a Willow Springs track day it dawned on me that racing is the only major worldwide sport where men and women compete head-to-head.
It’s obvious when stated but the understanding of the power racing held for gender equality seems to be as big of a surprise to everyone I tell this to as it was to me.
I began talking to racers in all categories of motorsports and was overwhelmed by the stories and struggles, and incredibly how little I understood about what it’s like being a woman in this world.
Long story short, GRRL! was born to answer the most common question I received when I chatted about my idea, “Are there really enough women to do a complete project about.” But I saw an opportunity to do something further, to create a global resource for women in motorsport.
A way women in the endless different racing disciplines could find each other. A way young girls could find women competing in the type of racing that has sparked their interest. A way for sponsors to more quickly zero in on possibilities for their programs. And for the general public to be able to more more than one female racer’s name who retired in 2018.
I wanted to take the pejoritive “throw like a girl”, “hit like a girl”, “run like a girl” and turn it into a positive. A serious form of praise. Because when girls succeed there’s so much more than dedication, hard work, and good fortune that crosses the line with them.
All of what you see now is Phase I. I need all the help I can get (spread the word, please) to get to Phases II and III.
