Race day at Firebird Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona… and this one had it ALL.
We started the morning by mixing fuel for my teammate Tony Schumacher’s car… knowing full well we were about to race each other FIRST ROUND. Not exactly how you draw it up, but that’s how qualifying shook out in this record-setting heat with 140° track temps all weekend long.
Tony and I caught up before the run talking about how wild it is to race your teammate right out of the gate… and even crazier that we’d be the LAST pair down the track trying with the qualifiers in front of us chasing the coolest surface possible.
After warm-up, I threw on the Meta glasses and headed to driver intros. We had a little fun with it — went full “boxing match” pose on stage — but once that was over… it was GAME TIME.
Round one: Me vs Tony.
We gave you a different perspective this time — Austin pulled double duty with the Meta glasses so you could ride along with him too. When the tree dropped, the car left hard and straight… I never saw or heard Tony.
Then it happened.
A small wisp of tire smoke triggered the boost over rev safety system, which shut the throttle off. From that point on, I was just along for the ride… coasting to the finish line. Meanwhile, Tony pedaled it, got back after it, and drove around me right at the stripe.
Tough loss — especially knowing that system has now cost us TWO round wins — but it’s there for a reason, and I get it.
At the top end, we still had some fun with Amanda Busick before our NHRA on FOX interview (you know we had to make a few engine noises 😄)… but there was no time to hang around.
Back in the pits, it was straight to work helping Tony’s team get ready for round two against #1 qualifier Shawn Langdon. Mixed more fuel, hung out with the fans, and of course showed you a nitro warm-up up close.
Then we got Tony suited up — including my new custom cool shirt from the Rick Ware Racing NASCAR team — and headed to the staging lanes where things got interesting with the “angry hornet” and Tony’s wife Summer 😆
Round two: Tony vs Shawn Langdon.
Both cars did their job, but Langdon was just too strong and turned on the win light.
Back at the pit, Tony and I had a real, honest conversation about the day, the runs, and everything in between — I think you’re really going to enjoy that part.
